Drew McIntyre used a promotional campaign to take a playful dig at a Premier League football team.
On Friday, WWE unveiled a new collection of European Football Legacy Title Belts. The European line is the latest sports licensing deal for WWE, who also has themed belts for NBA, NFL and MLB teams. One of the belts featured in the graphic was for the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, a team based in London, England.
Tottenham was established 142 years ago, but hasn’t found much championship success in several years. The Spurs were the runners-up in 2016-17, but haven’t won a Premier League Championship (known as English league prior to 1992) since 1960–61.
Drew McIntyre used the occasion to take a shot at the Spurs (lack of) success. McIntyre, a life-long (Glasgow) Rangers Football Club fan, took aim at Tottenham and said the WWE Legacy title is the only one they have a chance at holding.
“That’s the only title Tottenham have seen in years ???,” Drew McIntyre wrote on Twitter.
McIntyre’s words came hours after the Spurs won to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League bracket. The Rangers are also in the quarterfinals and could meet the Spurs in the finals if they both advance. However, it doesn’t look like McIntyre is giving Tottenham much of a chance to win the big one.
