Will Hulk Hogan answer the challenge?
While wrestlers traditionally settle their issues inside the squared circle, confrontations in settings such as bars and backstage areas are also common. During a recent episode of The Masters of Wrestling, former WWE star Paul Roma challenged one of his former colleagues to a fight in a different location, the octagon.
“There’s a gentleman out there. I think he has a couple of years on me, maybe two. I don’t think we spoke much about, and I’d like to get him in that octagon and put a little Paul Roma hurtin’ upside his head,” Roma said (H/T to PW Insider for the transcription).
According to Roma, that gentleman is none other than Hulk Hogan, with whom Roma shared a locker room in WWE and WCW. Moreover, his desire to shoot fight Hogan partially stems from his previous experience with Hogan. A notable turn-off came when Hogan allegedly refused to meet a disabled child after they arrived late to a meet and greet.
Roma, who brings forth a background in boxing and kickboxing, added that “I’m willingly to do it. I’m 66 years old man. Let’s have at it. I’m ready to go. I’ll take an ass beating if he thinks he can give me one. Let’s go!” He also pointed out that Hogan now runs an unscripted freestyle wrestling alongside Eric Bischoff.
When asked about the time frame he’d allow for Hogan to respond to his challenge, Roma noted that he’d be satisfied with a simple yes or no.
“I can’t force somebody that’s afraid to go in the squared circle with me, so at least let him be man enough to give me a response. Yay or nay is fine,” Roma said. It doesn’t have to be long. It doesn’t have to be sweet. You don’t have to send me a nice basket of fruit to sweeten me up. It’s okay Hulk. It’s okay. Just say you don’t want any part of me and it’s all good. You go about your business, and I go about mine and leave it right where it is.”
Roma and Hogan shared a wrestling ring on a handful of occasions, such as the 1991 Royal Rumble. Additionally, they found themselves on the opposite end of tag team action at a WCW live event in 1995.
