Rob Van Dam says there was a lot of interest in him being a surprise opponent on John Cena’s retirement tour.
RVD spoke with TMZ’s Inside The Ring and revealed that he wanted to be part of John Cena’s ongoing retirement tour. RVD and Cena are forever linked in WWE history due to their iconic showdown at ECW One Night Stand 2006. Van Dam used his Money In The Bank briefcase to challenge Cena for the WWE Championship, winning the title in the main event.
RVD implied that there was mutual interest for the match on WWE’s part. However, he said he “broke his heels,” putting an end to those talks.
“I wanted to be one of the return matches for John Cena on his retirement tour,” Rob Van Dam explained. “I was talking to them, there was a lot of interest. Without giving away too many details, we were probably going to do it, and [then] I broke my heels.”
RVD’s comment about the injury would imply that he was talking with WWE at the beginning of 2025. He broke both of his heels in April 2025 during an appearance at MLW Battle Riot VII. Despite the injury, Rob Van Dam still made non-wrestling appearances during WrestleMania week in Las Vegas. However, he used a wheelchair to get around that week.
Earlier this year, RVD addressed his in-ring status and said he does not consider himself retired. He continued, adding that he’s not sure he will ever officially retire and doesn’t believe he’ll ever make a big deal out of it.
