Ric Flair says he was asked to help form a wrestling union, but admitted it wasn’t something he wanted to explore.
Ric Flair’s pro wrestling career is the stuff of legend. The Nature Boy has been hailed as one of the greatest of all time by fellow wrestling icons such as The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Hulk Hogan even called Flair the greatest wrestler of all time, putting himself second on that list.
Flair’s tremendous work ethic, combined with his incredible promo skills, placed him among the elite performers of the territory era of professional wrestling. His feuds with Harley Race, Ricky Steamboat, and Terry Funk are still regarded as some of the greatest storylines in wrestling history.
Ric Flair questions why wrestling still has no union
During a recent appearance on Games with Names, host Julian Edelman credited Ric Flair for helping shape the evolution of the business—particularly WWE—given the record profits the company is generating today. In response, Flair brought up the lack of a wrestling union despite WWE being a multi-billion-dollar company.
“They don’t see it like that,” he said. “How do we not have a union? A multi-billion-dollar company. No union… Nobody wants to do it because they’ll just move on without you. They wanted me and Hogan to do it. Hulk called me and I said, ‘I’m not jumping out there. They’ll just replace me.’
“Jesse Ventura drove me crazy. ‘Come on, come on.’ I go, ‘Jesse, so I give up the NWA World Championship, walk out. They’ll just put the belt on DiBiase or back to Harley.’ It just wasn’t something I wanted to explore, but I was certainly asked to do it a lot.” [H/T: Fightful]
