Enzo Amore has revealed how he got permission to wear sneakers on WWE television.
Speaking to Dominic DeAngelo of Brass Ring Media, former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore claimed he was the first superstar in the company besides John Cena to wear a pair of Air Jordans on WWE television.
“I remember when I put the sneaks on, and I and I wrestled the NXT Takeover. It was the second NXT Takeover of all time, and I was wearing a pair of Ferrari Red Jordans, and I saw Wale tweet about NXT, we didn’t even know any celebrity or rapper was watching NXT, and I’m not too sure anyone on the NXT card besides me knew who f*cking Wale was, you know what I’m saying? But I knew. I was like, ‘Bang! light bulb! I need to keep wearing these sneaks.’”
Enzo Amore then claimed he had to break his leg and get a doctor’s note saying he couldn’t wear wrestling boots to get WWE to allow him to wear sneakers on TV.
“Now, I had to break my leg in NXT and get a doctor’s note that said I wasn’t going to wear wrestling boots, so no one was allowed to wear sneakers, bro, not even in the WWE unless your name was John Cena. So I’m the first guy to wear them that wasn’t John Cena to a point where Kofi Kingston, who’s on the main roster, comes up to me is like, ‘Yo, how you get what, what’s going on? How did you get sneaks on TV? Like the Nike logo without having to put a kick pad over it or something?’
“And I was like, ‘Well, I had to break my leg and get a doctor’s note that said I wasn’t comfortable wearing boots,’ and I waited until I was in Gorilla to put the sneakers on. Nobody saw me in them all day. And then they looked at me, my boss Bill DeMott at the time was like, ‘What do you got on your feet?’ I was like, ‘Here’s my doctor’s note,’ and I’m going through the curtain. So you can’t stop it at this point.”
Enzo Amore currently works the independent circuit under the name Real1 and recently claimed that AEW had no interest in him when he tried to join the promotion.
