SHIMMER may have closed its doors a couple of years ago, but its influence continues to be felt and heard 20 years after the all-women’s promotion came into existence.
Founded by Dave Prazak and Allison Danger, SHIMMER rose to prominence as the premier wrestling promotion for women in North America. The company held its debut show on November 6, 2005, in Berwyn, Illinois, with names such as Sara Del Rey, Beth Phoenix, and Mercedes Martinez featured on the inaugural card.
SHIMMER’s influence grew in the following years, with the promotion effectively serving as Ring of Honor’s sister promotion until ROH launched its own women’s division in 2015.
Current WWE Superstars who wrestled in SHIMMER include Becky Lynch, Bayley, Asuka, and Michin. Lynch’s 2-out-of-3 Falls match with Daizee Haze is considered one of the greatest matches in SHIMMER’s history.
Becky Lynch and Bayley wish SHIMMER a happy 20th anniversary
Becky Lynch took to Threads to share a throwback photo of herself from her days competing as Rebecca Knox in SHIMMER. The WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion thanked her former promotion for giving her a platform to showcase her talent.
“Happy 20th anniversary Shimmer. A very special company and a special time in my life. They gave this punk teenage gal a chance and a platform and I’ll always be grateful,” she wrote.
Fellow WWE Superstar Bayley also expressed her gratitude to the promotion and founder Dave Prazak by posting a throwback photo.
