Rey Mysterio Pens Heartfelt Letter To Eddie Guerrero on 20th Anniversary Of His Death

Rey Mysterio honored his late friend Eddie Guerrero by writing a heartfelt letter in The Players’ Tribune on the 20-year anniversary of Guerrero’s death.

In the emotional piece, Rey Mysterio reflected on missing his friend Eddie Guerrero. Their long history and the enormous impact Guerrero left on him, Dominik Mysterio and the entire professional wrestling industry.

He opened the letter with memories from 1987, when he rode with his uncle Rey Sr. to shows in Tijuana and first saw Eddie Guerrero perform. He wrote that seeing Guerrero for the first time felt like witnessing “a shooting star” and realizing he was looking at “the greatest wrestler of all time.”

Mysterio explained that their friendship grew inside the ring through the art of lucha libre. He recalled studying Eddie during training and realizing the difference between good and legendary, “There’s a mountain of difference between “pretty good” and “Eddie.” Between pretty good and perfect.”

Rey Mysterio also shared a major moment that defined their bond from infamous match from Halloween Havoc 1997. He said he feared losing his mask early in his U.S. career until Eddie stepped in to protect him. “Don’t worry, Rey! We’re going to make this right,” Guerrero told him before convincing officials to change the finish and Mysterio called it a gift he never forgot.

Throughout the letter, he expressed how much time has passed since Eddie Guerrero’s death, writing, “I could live another 50 years — and when it comes to our friendship, I’d still be Little Bro. I’m forever your little bro. And you’re forever my big brother.”

He reflected on what Eddie Guerrero meant to Latino wrestlers and fans. He added Guerrero helped prove that smaller luchadores could headline major shows and inspire generations. Mysterio also spoke about his son Dominik Mysterio ’s career and how Eddie would proudly approve of the man he has become.

He joked that Dom eventually evolved from “Rey Mysterio’s baby boy” to “Eddie Guerrero’s demon boy,” fully embracing a heel turn that reminded him of Eddie’s charisma. Mysterio said Eddie would love every bit of it.

He ended the tribute by recalling his recent WWE RAW return, where mentioning Eddie’s name caused the fans to erupt. “Brother, that’s the LOUDEST pop I heard all night. It was like an explosion. Like I’d invoked the name of God himself.”

In the end, Mysterio closed the letter with a message directly to Eddie, “I wish I could tell you everything. I wish I could tell you anything. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. I’ll love you for the rest of them.”
