Rey Mysterio once again showed why he is one of the toughest and most respected wrestlers in the business during the June 8 episode of WWE RAW.
The WWE Hall of Famer challenged Penta for the WWE Men’s Intercontinental Championship in a fast-paced match filled with the high-flying action both stars are known for. While the match had a lot of highlight-worthy moments, there was one moment when Mysterio appeared to almost break his neck.
Rey Mysterio escapes disaster after a scary landing
Mysterio tried to do a Hurricanrana from Penta’s back and landed awkwardly on his neck. The landing looked scary, especially considering Mysterio’s long history of injuries and surgeries. It looked like he might actually be hurt.
However, Mysterio performed the move and immediately got back to his feet. Just moments later, he even hit his signature 619 and delivered a springboard splash on the champion, showing no signs of slowing down.
Mysterio’s ability to keep performing at such a high level while many of his peers have already retired is commendable. Even at 51 years old, he continues to pull off moves that many younger wrestlers would think twice about attempting.
The match itself was highly competitive from start to finish. Mysterio and Penta traded counters, dives, and near-falls while showing off the skills that have made them two of the best luchadors in wrestling.
Mysterio came close to winning several times. He connected with multiple 619s and even landed a springboard splash that nearly ended the match. But Penta refused to stay down and eventually won the match.
However, after the match, Ethan Page and Rusev attacked both Mysterio and Penta. Although Dragon Lee tried to help them, Page threw him over the barricade. The most shocking moment came when Rusev ripped Mysterio’s mask off.
It was Chad Gable who finally came to Mysterio’s rescue.
