Christian Cage’s 5 Best AEW Matches

Christian Cage is, without a doubt, doing some of the best work of his career in AEW. The 28-year veteran signed with Tony Khan’s promotion in 2021 and went on to become of its best acquisitions to date.

At 49 years of age, Captain Charisma has already had some great matches against the likes of Darby Allin, Jungle Boy, and Wardlow among others. He’s the current TNT Champion, a title he retained against Allin after a gut-wrenching 2-out-of-3 Falls Match at AEW WrestleDream.

With that being said, here are Christian Cage’s 5 best matches in AEW.

Christian Cage, Bryan Danielson, Jack Perry & Luchasaurus vs. Adam Cole, Kenny Omega & Young Bucks (Dynamite 2nd Anniversary Show – October 6, 2021)

One of the best AEW matches for Christian Cage came in the form of a multi-man bout on the Dynamite 2nd Anniversary Show in October 2021. Captain Charisma joined forces with Jurassic Express and Bryan Danielson to take on the super elite group of Adam Cole, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks.

The match featured tremendous display of athleticism and in-ring acumen. All eight participants brought everything to the ring. Christian and Danielson’s experience came in handy as they used their incredible in-ring awareness to take on the brash yet incredibly resilience Omega and his team mates. The match earned 4.75 stars from Dave Meltzer.

Christian Cage vs. Jack Perry (Revolution 2023)

Christian Cage cut a fantastic heel promo in the wake of his shocking betrayal of “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry at AEW Dynamite Road Rager. He explained his choice and told the world he came to AEW to “make a ton of money.” Cage also brought Perry’s late father Luke Perry into the feud and made it extremely personal.

After months of animosity, the former partners met in a Final Burial Match at AEW Revolution 2023. The build match itself was fantastic with Christian having pushed Perry to his limits. The match saw Perry go through a range of emotions as he tried to convince himself to put down his former mentor.

It was a fantastic ending to one of the most heated feuds in AEW history and furthered Christian’s crusade against dead fathers in the promotion.

Christian Cage vs. Darby Allin (AEW WrestleDream 2023)

Christian Cage’s feud with Darby Allin stemmed from Captain Charisma’s boisterous claim over the TNT Championship. Allin defeated Christian at Fight for the Fallen 2023. He and Sting were also successful against Christian and Swerve Strickland at All In.

This led to their latest and perhaps most brutal encounter to date at WrestleDream. The pair collided for the TNT Championship in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match at the October 1st pay-per-view.

Darby won the first fall with a jackknife pin. The two exchanged several stiff moves before Christian pulled over the steel steps to the side and slammed Allin on them. He repeated the move with much more brutality, allowing him to win the second fall due to a 10 count.

As Darby was being pulled on a stretcher, Christian Cage performed a frog splash on him from the top rope. He also hit the Kill Skitch on Darby all the onto the exposed ring board. The closing stretch saw Nick Wayne betray Darby Allin to align himself with his new father figure.

Also, the outcome led to the AEW debut of Adam Copeland (formerly Edge).

Christian Cage and Jurassic Express vs. Superkliq (Full Gear 2021)

Adam Cole’s AEW debut saw him take out Christian Cage and the Jurassic Express. Cole would reunite with the Young Bucks to form Superkliq in the build to their 6-Man Tag Falls Count Anywhere Match against Christian, Jungle Boy, and Luchasaurus at Full Gear 2021.

The match featured all sorts of brutality, with both teams using outside objects such as trash cans and thumbtacks to their fullest effect. It also featured several cool aerial spots including Luchasaurus’ shooting star press onto Superkliq.

The match received the coveted five-star rating from Dave Meltzer, making it Christian Cage’s first and only five-star match to date.

Christian Cage vs. Kenny Omega (AEW Rampage – August 13, 2021)

Kenny Omega delivered some fantastic matches during his run as the “Belt Collector.” One such match took place against Christian on the August 13, 2021, episode of AEW Rampage. The bout in question was for the Cleaner’s Impact World Championship.

The pair collided at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The crowed was really into the match and made every strike and every reversal feel important. Don Callis, who was in Omega’s corner, also played his part to perfection.

From the challenger’s in-ring psychology to the champion’s selling of Kill Switch on the chair, everything was top notch. For those who are unfamiliar with Christian Cage’s game in AEW, I’d recommend checking this match as an introduction to Captain Charisma’s work in AEW.
