Jessie Godderz: ‘Wrestlers’ Will Resonate With A Wide Audience, Teach Them Not To Give Up

Jessie Godderz is very excited for fans to see what’s going on at OVW.

WrestleZone spoke with “Mr. PEC-Tacular” Jessie Godderz ahead of the premiere of Wrestlers on Netflix. The series features Godderz and the talent from Ohio Valley Wrestling working to achieve their dreams of pro wrestling stardom.

Godderz, the current OVW National Heavyweight Champion, is a veteran of the squared circle and entertainment. He has appeared in IMPACT Wrestling, and he’s also one of Big Brother‘s most memorable competitors. Godderz was asked how Wrestlers was different than the reality shows he’s been part of, and what the final product of the Netflix show will be like.

“I think that everybody’s going to be able to see a bunch of individuals that haven’t given up yet. I think a lot of people have dreams and aspirations,” Godderz explained. “Whether it’s them becoming a doctor, or a lawyer, or a firefighter, or racecar driver, or a professional football player, a professional wrestler. Life kicks you in the teeth enough times to where you give up on ’em. And I think that the depiction that’s going to come across. It’s going to run the gambit of every demographic can see a little bit of themselves and probably one character or another.”

Godderz says the show has mainstream appeal that will reach the whole country, and hopefully the whole world. He said Wrestlers is in a good position because it doesn’t necessarily paint anyone as the “bad guy” that you might find on a reality television show.

“It’s not necessarily like the dynamic that other reality television kind of needs to have, like a good versus evil,” he noted. “This one is, I think everybody’s gonna have an awesome light. And I’m excited, like, wholeheartedly. It’s by far the biggest thing I’ve ever been a part of.”

Chasing Your Dreams

Godderz hopes Wrestlers convinces people to go after their dreams, whether it’s inside the squared circle or otherwise.

“You only fail when you give up. And that’s when it gets real. And the people that want to hate on individuals, you never get shit on by people that are doing better than you. You’re always gonna get cut down by individuals that are upset that you’re still trying. You haven’t given up, and that’s why I think this will resonate with a lot of people. They can kind of see whether it’s a financial struggle, whether it’s a family struggle,” he explained, “whether it’s a relationship struggle. There’s so many different facets of the real world that are being injected into this series.

“It’s going to be a testament to everybody’s wherewithal of realization in their own life and kind of seeing it like, wow, even though X, Y, and Z, the wheels are falling off,” Godderz explained, “they’re still going out there and performing. I always kind of bring it back to parenting because it’s like, your kids don’t care what kind of day dad has; they need you to be their dad. The fans don’t care what kind of what — all the other BS or financial struggles or like car broke down or whatever the case may be going into the show. They want you to put on a show.”

Who To Watch

Godderz and names like EC3, Leila Grey and others have had prior television exposure in other wrestling promotions. Are there any specific names he’s looking forward to getting more of a spotlight thanks to the new show?

“Yeah, there’s a bunch of people. Eric [Darkstorm from DarKKloudZ]. [‘Hollyhood’] Haley J I think is gonna be a pretty big character inside Wrestlers. Joe Mack actually is Canadian. There’s a handful of other guys. Omar Amir, I trained with him down at Bubba and D-Von’s at Team 3D Academy. So we’ve known each other for years and years. Luscious Lawrence has been doing this for a hot minute, and he’s right there on the brink of finding himself. The OutRunners, they’re literally frequenting ROH and AEW weekly,” he noted.

Godderz said OVW has it all, from great storytelling through comedy and drama to veterans and up-and-comers.

“And if people get to watch Wrestlers, definitely continue to go back and watch the weekly [OVW] shows too,” Godderz said. “It’s awesome. It sincerely is. And I’m stoked to be a part of it and having to continue to hopefully elevate it.”

Godderz said if that’s not enough of a reason to tune in, you also get to see him with his shirt off.
