Pete Dunne Is Lean, Focused, And Ready To Take Over NXT

The Brusierweight may have been stuck at home for months because of the global pandemic, but he wasn’t sitting on his laurels. Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Pete Dunne expressed that this break from the ring focused him in on exactly what he wants out of the business.

“I’ve done this since I was 12 years old and this was the most time off I’ve ever had. When it’s your job and it’s day–in and day–out, you’re so close to it that you can lose focus of the bigger picture. I was able to get in the best shape of my life and completely focus on what I wanted. The NXT title is atop that list.”

Dunne aspires to be in the same position he was once in back in NXT UK, where he was the longest-reigning top champion of the promotion before eventually losing to WALTER. Part of recreating that success in NXT involves surrounding himself with valuable allies.

“I can carry a brand. I did it in the UK with an entire brand basically built around me, and my in-ring work speaks for itself. Now I’m with Pat McAfee, who is incredibly charismatic. It’s a winning combination.”

However, if he is truly going to become another brand’s focal point, it all comes down to Dunne’s own progress. The charismatic brawler feels that he’s ready for the big time thanks to his time off.

“I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m focused, and I have more of an edge to me than I’ve ever had. I’m evolving and so is the Bruiserweight character, and I can’t wait to see what this next year brings.”
