Back in February of 2019, Booker T sued Activision over what appeared to be the likeness of his “G.I. Bro” persona in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Years later, the lawsuit has come to an end, and it has left the former two-time WWE Hall of Famer looking up at the lights as Activision emerges from the lawsuit victorious.
Sportico received the following statement from Activision Blizzard’s Trial Counsel regarding the end of the lawsuit:
“We are pleased with the outcome. Bottom line, to call this a frivolous case would be a massive understatement,” said E. Leon Carter of Carter Arnett, Trail Counsel for Activision Blizzard, in a statement. “Activision creates games with the utmost integrity and is extremely proud of everyone involved with the development and creative process for all of our games including Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, including the incredible talent like William Romeo who helped bring our vision to life. Today, the jury validated that process.”
The character in question went by the name of Prophet and featured many similarities to Booker T’s “G.I. Bro” character. But it wasn’t enough for the jury to side in his favor.
Sportico reports that during the litigation that Activision argued Booker T “exaggerated similarities between G.I. Bro in the poster and an image of Prophet owned by Activision.” While Activision called the pose that Prophet made in the marketing “generic,” Booker T argued that the similarities between Prophet and his character were closer than what Activision wanted people to believe.
