David Finlay: I Was Impressed By The Level Of Talent In IMPACT Wrestling, ‘It’s Something I Wasn’t Aware Of’

When FinJuice arrived in IMPACT Wrestling, they drove home the feeling that the Forbidden Door has been blown off its hinges.

One half of the team, David Finlay has starred in New Japan-Pro Wrestling for a while now, but the opportunity to work in IMPACT was the perfect chance to test himself against a different roster.

During an appearance on the Wrestling Perspective Podcast, Finlay discussed how FinJuice’s arrival in the promotion came about, and he stated that he jumped on the opportunity because the COVID-19 limited his ability to wrestle for several months.

“So I got a text from Rocky [Romero] one day like, ‘Hey man, do you and Juice wanna do IMPACT?'” said Finlay. “So of course, then I like text Juice [Robinson] real quick, I’m like, ‘We’re obviously gonna do IMPACT, right?’ Like, there’s no way we’re saying no to this. Especially with COVID restrictions in Japan and just travel restrictions and all that, we spent the last year sitting on our a**, kinda, and I like staying busy. I love wrestling snd when I don’t get to do it, I’m not as happy.

“So it was an opportunity just to get back in the ring. So I was like yeah let’s do it. And we were kinda off the races and we’ve loved every minute of it.”

Looking back on his arrival in IMPACT Wrestling, Finlay agreed with co-host Dennis Farrell’s comparison to the first day of school, where one meetsa large group of new people that they’re not familiar with. He then described how he was pleasantly surprised by IMPACT’s level of talent, which exceeded his expectations.

“That’s a very good way of phrasing it, as a first day of school feeling,” said Finlay. “Because I knew a couple people, I knew Sami Callihan because he had a tour over in Japan, and a handful of other guys. [Chris] Sabin is another one that comes to mind, but yeah for the most part, it was very much like first day of school, like, ‘Alright, hey what’s up, I’m David,’ [and] trying to figure out where you fit in. And it was a nice surprise, everyone was super cool. Everyone’s good people there.

“And to my pleasant surprise, I found out IMPACT actually has like a lot of talent, which made me very happy as well. It’s something I wasn’t aware of. More talent than I realized, so that’s been a nice discovery.”
