‘American Gladiators’ Spinoff Featuring WWE Superstars In The Works, UK Revival Coming To BBC One

A new version of the hit American Gladiators franchise is coming to the UK, but there’s still no news on when fans will see a WWE-themed version of the series.

Variety is reporting that a “Gladiators” revival will be airing on BBC One next year. The sports-based competition series will air eleven episodes and features new games and classic ones, including the famed “Eliminator” event at the end of each show. Filming for the new series will take place at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield next year.

A more interesting note to wrestling fans is that while the series got the green light in the UK, there actually was a US version pitched that featured WWE Superstars.

Deadline first reported that MGM would be partnering with WWE for a reboot of American Gladiators, and the show would actually feature WWE Superstars in the roles of the Gladiators. No other details about that specific series have come out since being announced, with Variety noting that there’s no telling when or where the project would air.

The Gladiators brand has a historic link to pro wrestling across both versions of the show, as original Gladiators announcer Mike Adamle had a brief run with WWE in 2008, and Hulk Hogan was one of the hosts of the NBC revival that same year. Additionally, Nick Aldis was featured on the UK version of the series as the Gladiator “Oblivion” in 2008.
