Wade Barrett will be sticking around with WWE.
The former Intercontinental Champion first signed with WWE in later 2007. A few years later, Barrett won the first ever season of NXT, then going on to form the infamous Nexus stable. Wade Barrett departed from the company in 2016, but returned to NXT in August of 2020. There, he served as color commentator as a one-off. Barrett would then morph into a full-time member of the NXT broadcast team over the last two years. In an interview with BT Sport, Barrett confirmed his new contract extension with WWE, as previous two-year deal was set to expire.
“I’m about to hit my two-year anniversary. Just signed a new extension to my contract,” Barrett announced. “[My] contract was up. It’s been two years, so I’ve been very happy. I think August 2020 is when I came back. Last week, [I] agreed to a new deal. Very happy to be staying around with WWE and continuing my role with NXT. Thrilled to be in that environment. Loving it.”
Wade Barrett currently works alongside Vic Joseph as a part of the Tuesday night NXT 2.0 commentary team.
Barrett has not competed in the ring since teaming with Sheamus in a tag team loss to The New Day on the April 4, 2016 episode of WWE RAW. There, his career was “effectively ended” after taking a powerful spear. Furthermore, Barrett doesn’t rule out an in-ring return, he appears happy about being a color commentator on NXT.
