Chris Jericho: Ideas Have Been Discussed For AEW Winnipeg’s Debut, Maybe I Team With Kenny Omega

Two of AEW’s top stars happen to be natives of Winnipeg, Canada, and they could potentially work together in some capacity at the company’s debut in the city.

Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega are both former AEW World Champions, and they hail from Winnipeg. AEW’s Winnipeg debut has been announced for March 14, and “The Ocho” teased the possibility of the duo teaming up at the event.

Speaking on Winnipeg Sports Talk, Jericho was asked about the potential plans for his involvement at the show. He noted that it’s still three months away, but some ideas are being discussed. The former AEW World Champion stated that some possibilities include him doing something with Omega, including a potential tag team match.

“Well, that’s three months from now, so we’ll have to see where the storylines take us,” Omega said. “We just finished up with the Blackpool Combat Club, and then of course, the biggest upset in pro wrestling history when Action Andretti beat me on Dynamite last week, so we’ll have to address that. Ricky Starks I think is another one that we’re kind of looking at getting involved with. So there’s a lot of great programs, and that’s the thing for me and the Jericho Appreciation Society.

“We always wanna work with somebody new and really sink our teeth into a storyline, so I think in mid-March, we’ll probably have a lot of cool things going on. But we’ve already kind of discussed a few ideas, what we could do that night. Maybe something with Kenny and I, maybe something with Kenny and I tagging, but it all depends on what the storylines are. It doesn’t matter what the exact storylines are. I know it’s gonna be a great show.”

Earlier in the interview, Jericho expressed his excitement about AEW’s Winnipeg debut and noted that it will be “poetic justice”, as the company was largely inspired by his match against Omega at the Tokyo Dome, and another Winnipeg native, Don Callis, was a vital part of making that clash a reality.

“We’re excited. It’s gonna be a great night, and I’m really kind of pleasantly surprised, if that’s the right word, that our second-ever Canadian show is Winnipeg,” Jericho said. “So I can’t think of a better city to be coming to than Winnipeg. It’s such a great wrestling town, it’s such a great Chris Jericho town.

“Quite frankly, if it wasn’t for Winnipeg, there might not be an AEW because the whole company was kind of kick-started on the headlining match that Kenny Omega and I had at the Tokyo Dome in 2018. That was facilitated by Don Callis, so three Winnipeggers put together this dream match, which is where Tony Khan got the idea that you could do some good business in the states with a new wrestling company. So that’s kind of where it all started, so it’s very much poetic justice for us to be coming to Winnipeg so early on in our tenure with AEW.”

WrestleZone will provide more information about AEW’s debut in Winnipeg as it becomes available.
