Report: Stone Cold Steve Austin Was Offered WrestleMania 39 Match With Brock Lesnar

It appears that Stone Cold Steve Austin is the Belle of the ball when it comes to having a potential match at WrestleMania 39.

Earlier this week, it was reported that WWE had recently proposed a match between Roman Reigns and The Texas Rattlesnake for this year’s WrestleMania after The Tribal Chief’s match with The Rock was seemingly taken off the table. According to Dave Meltzer on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, that isn’t the full story and the match that was actually pitched was between Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar.

“It was Brock Lesnar. Yeah, and it’s not on,” Dave Meltzer said. “I mean like, something can happen now, but I guess this was actually it was — I mean, it’s been talked about probably for months because I know that when that Brock Lesnar Gunther thing came up, I was told immediately that that’s not happening or that’s not the idea right now. Maybe it’s gonna happen now. But the idea was something that’s a secret. So Austin was that secret, and the match is not on, and it looks like it’s going to be Lesnar with Lashley based on the show tonight; I don’t have that confirmed that’s a Wrestlemania match. Obviously, they will likely both be in the Rumble and probably feud and whether that means Montreal in the pay-per-view [Elimination Chamber] or Wrestlemania. I don’t know, but it feels like it’s probably something to do with WrestleMania.”

In response to this story, Sapp said that the Reigns match was still pitched to Austin in addition to the Lesnar match.

During a past appearance on the Brewbound Podcast, Austin said that he would return for WrestleMania 39 if he was asked but pointed out that it’s not his call to make. Since then, it was reported by Fightful that the Triple H-led WWE regime had offered Austin another match. It was unclear what event that match would take place at, but it was presumed to be at WrestleMania. Despite the offer, it was said that the two sides were far apart on terms at that time.

Based on recent events on WWE TV, it would appear that Lesnar will be paired up with Bobby Lashley once again, but we still don’t know if Stone Cold Steve Austin is competing or who his opponent might be at WrestleMania 39.
