Kurt Angle reflects on having a tumor surgically removed and the problems that stemmed from that surgery in 2015.
In 2015, Kurt Angle was undergoing a change in his career as he was preparing to leave TNA Wrestling after almost 10 years with the company. During the most recent episode of the Kurt Angle Show podcast, Angle reflected on needing to have surgery to remove a benign tumor from his neck. This was a procedure that, according to Kurt, was simple but led to problems due to an infection.
“Well, the tumor wasn’t a big deal, it was just something that I needed to get rid of. It was a lump in my neck, and they wanted to get out. It wasn’t cancerous. It was benign. So it wasn’t that serious of a surgery. But what happened afterward, that got serious,” said Kurt.
Explaining those serious issues, Angle recalled being told that the surgery led to a buildup of fluid on his spinal cord and could have been fatal.
Yeah, I never expected that to happen. You know, it’s a simple surgery, they’re taking out a tumor. I thought, ‘Okay, this will be easy.’ And then I come to find out that, you know, I have a bunch of fluid on my spinal cord and it’s messing me up, like my motor skills and everything. I had trouble breathing. It was really difficult. It was a really bad time for me.”
Ultimately, everything ended up okay for Kurt Angle who would leave TNA and return to WWE in 2017 before having his final match at WrestleMania 35 in 2019.
