Brock Lesnar Thought He Was ‘Truly Done’ With Wrestling In 2020

Brock Lesnar might not fit inside a phone booth but he certainly knows about keeping a balance between work and home.

Speaking with Daniel Cormier for ESPN MMA, Brock Lesnar compared himself to Superman. Lesnar said he leads a much different life at home, and he still can’t believe all that he’s achieved in his professional career.

“I’ve separated myself from this life, with my family and kids. So it’s like, I’m like Superman. When I leave the house, I put on a whole ‘nother face and aura, and I get home, and I just check out. Now we’re 23, 25 years into this, aging myself like holy crap. I have to pinch myself all the time to remind me,” he explained. “I was just a poor dairy farmer kid from Webster, South Dakota, and it’s pretty crazy where you and I ended up in this world.”

Lesnar also spoke about being able to work as a babyface now, noting how refreshing it’s been for his career. He had considered himself completely retired a few years ago, but a phone call from Vince McMahon brought him back into the fold.

“In 2020, I retired and was gonna be just done because I had my 20 years, and COVID hit, my contract was up,” Lesnar explained. “I had my very first wrestling match in Hammond, Minnesota, in an empty garage. There I was 20 years later, fighting Drew McIntyre in front of no people for the WWE Championship. I was like, ‘You know what? It’s gone full circle.’ I was truly done.

“I grew my beard out, grew my hair out, and then my birthday came around, and the phone rang, and it was Vince and, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘I’m just chilling [laughs]. We didn’t even have a game plan,” he noted. “It was SummerSlam, and I flew down there. I said, ‘If you wanna do this, let’s hash a deal out, and I’d love to see you.’ So I flew down to Vegas, and we’re off to the races. I was like, ‘I don’t want to cut my beard or cut my hair.’ He was like, ‘I love it.’ So here we are.”

Brock Lesnar has had 12 matches since returning from his retirement phase, and he recently started a feud with Cody Rhodes.
