Sami Zayn Reveals He Once Pitched Having A Match Against Byron Saxton

Sami Zayn says he one pitched having a match with commentator/interviewer Byron Saxton.

These days, Zayn is one of WWE‘s most popular stars. He and Kevin Owens defeated The Usos to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 39. But Zayn recently revealed that, during his days as a dastardly heel, he envisioned facing Saxton in the ring.

Speaking on WWE’s The Bump, Zayn was asked to name which member of the commentary team he would fight if he had to, and he recalled how he previously pitched a match where he would face Saxton.

“I have two different answers for this,” Zayn said. “Many years ago, I was actually pitching to have a match with Byron Saxton, and it never came to fruition. The behind-the-scenes stuff, it never really caught on, but it was something that I thought could have been really interesting, especially when I was a bit more dastardly. I think personally there’s something very endearing about him.

“I know not everybody feels that way, but I certainly do, and I thought there could have really been something there in a wrestler-versus-commentator kind of thing, even on a premium live event. This is going back many, many years now, so whether it’ll ever actually happen or not, I don’t know.

Zayn continued by noting that Saxton was previously signed as a wrestler, so he had a potential match between the two in his “back pocket”, but it never happened.

“He is actually a wrestler,” Zayn said. “He was a wrestler under contract for many, many years, and not everybody knows that. That’s something I always kind of have in my back pocket one day, when I was doing my dastardly stuff, is to one day zero in on Byron and turn that into something, but it never came to pass.”

Zayn and Owens will defend the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship against The Usos on the May 28 episode of WWE SmackDown.
