New Champions Crowned At NJPW Wrestling Dontaku

Multiple title changes occurred at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku.

The May 3 event featured several title matches, and some of the challengers emerged victorious.

First, Hikuleo defeated KENTA to win the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship. KENTA previously won the gold by beating Fred Rosser at NJPW Battle in the Valley.

Next, the trio of Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tomohiro Ishii beat Minoru Suzuki, Ren Narita, and El Desperado of Strong Style to win the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship. Ahead of the show, Okada was set to challenge for the gold with two mystery partners, which subsequently turned out to be Ishii and Tanahashii.

With the win, the team of Okada, Tanahashi, and Ishii won the titles for the first time. Tanahashi is a four-time champion and Ishii is a three-time champion, while this reign marks Okada’s first. Strong Style previously won the titles at NJPW The New Beginning In Osaka.

Elsewhere on the show, David Finlay defeated Tama Tonga to win the NEVER Openweight Championship. El Phantasmo attacked Finlay after the bell, but Wrestling Dontaku was still a night to celebrate for the Bullet Club leader.

Tonga previously won the gold by defeating Karl Anderson at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17.
