Sami Zayn: I Was Nearly Ready To ‘Abandon Ship’ With The Bloodline Story At One Point

Sami Zayn looks back on The Bloodline storyline and admits he was nearly ready to abandon ship at one point.

Throughout 2022, Zayn gradually became a member of The Bloodline; as “The Honorary Uce”, he earned the group’s trust, and he was featured alongside Roman Reigns, The Usos, Solo Sikoa, and Paul Heyman. Zayn turned on Reigns at WWE Royal Rumble, and he faced “The Tribal Chief’ at WWE Elimination Chamber.

Speaking on WWE After The Bell with Corey Graves, when asked whether there were people who doubted his involvement with the storyline, Zayn noted that there were. He also recalled how he was almost ready to abandon ship at one point because he was growing impatient, (H/t Jeremy Lambert of Fightful for the transcription.)

“Yeah, there were, and I can’t mention names [laughs],” Zayn said. “There were doubts as to whether it should even happen. Even in its early infancy stage of it all. Then, for me, going back to a question about impatience. There was a point when I was actually very impatient with the storyline and I was almost ready to abandon ship and say, ‘Okay, we need to start moving on in a different direction if this isn’t going to go where it needs to go.’

“For me, it all hinged on me and Roman getting together finally and the swerve being, ‘Roman likes this guy.’ You expect him to not like him, but he meets him, and he likes him. That was the money of the whole thing. He buys in. Roman drives the whole story, and it works very well, even if he’s not there, but because he’s the main antagonist, his decision at the next point in the story is going to drive and propel the story in whatever direction it’s going. You needed him involved.”

Zayn and Owens went on to defeat The Usos to retain the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 39. They also defeated Reigns and Sikoa at WWE Night of Champions.

The Bloodline story continued to heat up on the June 2 episode of WWE SmackDown, as Jimmy Uso explained his actions, and Sikoa attacked him. More information is available here.
