CM Punk Believes The Original Plan Was To Face Seth Rollins At WrestleMania 40

CM Punk comments on his original WrestleMania 40 plans.

Prior to his triceps injury suffered in the Royal Rumble match in January, it appeared that CM Punk was slated to challenge WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins in Philadelphia. However, that will now remain a “what if” scenario.

During a recent appearance on MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Punk was asked about potentially finding himself in a WrestleMania main event had he not suffered his injury. (H/t Fightful for the transcription)

“It changed a lot. I came back in and told Triple H, ‘Look, I’m not here to steal anybody’s spotlight, take anybody’s main event. I get it.’ I was pissed ten years ago when I had to sit through Rock-Cena two years in a row. Now, everything is different. Mania is two nights. More people get that opportunity.

“For me, the booker in my head, you cannot become main event talent unless you work with other main event talent. You can’t become main event talent unless you work main event spots afforded to main event talent. That’s what I crave. More knowledge and experience. I want to be that guy and see if I can be that guy. The plan, I think, was me and Seth.”

When asked if he believes a match against Rollins would’ve headlined WrestleMania Saturday, Punk said, “I believe so. Again, I came in, ‘I’m not asking questions.'”

Rollins will still headline WrestleMania Saturday as he teams with Cody Rhodes to battle The Rock and Roman Reigns. Rollins will then defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Drew McIntyre on Sunday with CM Punk on commentary.
