Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes reportedly passed on a pitched heel turn, and John Cena was the second choice.
At WWE Elimination Chamber, John Cena turned heel as he attacked Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes, who had just rejected The Rock’s offer. New reports suggest that there had been another plan.
In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that The Rock initially wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel and align with him heading into WrestleMania 41. Per Meltzer, when Rhodes rejected the idea, John Cena was picked as the next choice.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) then reported an update and confirmed hearing that Cody Rhodes was pitched a heel turn, and he passed. The report notes that, after the rejection, Cena was pitched to, and he agreed to it. Sapp writes that The Rock was “all for” making it happen.
Sapp also notes that this is common during WrestleMania season, as pitches are often made for big things to happen. The report also highlights how many close to Rhodes hadn’t even heard about the pitch.
As previously reported, the WrestleMania match between Rhodes and John Cena has been planned as far back as December.
WrestleZone will have coverage of WWE SmackDown as it airs on Friday.
