Jason Baker Reveals Hidden Contribution To Chelsea Green’s Attire In WWE

Jason Baker is using his special effects talents to entertain fans on the silver screen and on WWE programming. His latest project, The Jester 2, is coming to theaters nationwide on September 15th and 16th, thanks to Fathom Entertainment.

The WWE Universe is familiar with Baker’s work, as he’s created masks for several Superstars, including (and perhaps most notably) the late Bray Wyatt. Baker detailed his role as the special makeup effects supervisor on Jester 2 during a new interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, and shared some of the challenges he faced in working on the horror sequel.

“My company did all the special makeup effects for the film. We helped come up with the look of the Jester. Colin [Krawchuk], the director, we worked with him on the first one. He and Michael [Sheffield], who plays the Jester, we had an absolutely wonderful time working with those guys. But Colin kind of felt that — and it’s no one’s fault that we sort of steered too far away from the look of the Jester from the short films. But he wanted to go back to that. At the same time, [he wanted to] do something sort of fresh and unique.

“So that was sort of our first goal was figuring out, ‘How can we do an homage to the original short films and the first mask that they had, but also take it in a new direction and make it something that is fun and unique?’ I’m really proud of what we landed on. I think it’s a really fun, different look, and I’m really excited to see what people think of it.”

There’s plenty of crossover appeal between pro wrestling and horror fanbases

Baker was asked how The Jester 2 might appeal to pro wrestling fans, given that he works behind the scenes in horror and WWE. Baker joked that the titular Jester doesn’t try to incorporate pro wrestling ideas, like Money In The Bank cash-ins, but said that he’s never met a wrestling fan that isn’t also a horror fan on some level.

“I don’t know. The Jester doesn’t cash in on anybody. There’s no run-ins. The ending is not a schmoz,” Baker quipped. “But that’s the beautiful thing. I’ve never met a wrestling fan that’s not really a horror fan or vice versa. So I just really hope the wrestling community enjoys it as much as the horror community does.”

In addition to Bray Wyatt, Baker’s work has also been worn by Shinsuke Nakamura and Rhea Ripley. Baker said he loves working with the WWE Superstars, and he has countless ideas he’d love to incorporate. Wyatt’s Fiend masks are the most obvious of his creations, but he also shared that some of his other work has been featured on WWE TV without fans realizing it.

Baker contributed a key piece to Chelsea Green’s look recently

Chelsea Green, then the WWE Women’s United States Champion, competed in a street fight on the March 7 episode of SmackDown. Baker revealed his contributions to Green’s now-infamous “Cactus Jack” look she wore earlier this year, sharing that he collaborated with her on a “toothless” mouthpiece to make her look more like Mick Foley.

Chelsea Green, she had a hardcore match, so she was like, ‘I’m gonna dress up like Cactus Jack.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, let me make you a mouth guard that looks like you’re missing teeth like Mick Foley,’ and that way I can just kind of add to [her cosplay idea]. She loved it. We made that for her and gave it to her. Just little fun stuff like that.

“That’s half the fun of working with WWE and working with the talent, is that it’s such a collaborative process. Good ideas come from anywhere if you’re listening. It’s so much fun getting to just kind of spitball ideas with people. Every day I go to work, I’m really fortunate. I’m really excited to see what comes next.”

Chelsea Green is ‘so far ahead of the curve’

Pritchard mentioned how Green turns whatever she’s given into an entertaining segment, and she’s earned a lot of praise from her peers. Baker shared the same sentiment, proclaiming that Green’s work will only become more appreciated as time progresses.

“I say it all the time. In ten years, people will go back and study Chelsea Green’s tapes. I don’t think the audience realizes the genius that is Chelsea Green right now,” Baker said. “I think she’s so far ahead of the curve that people are going to go back and look at her and be like, ‘This was so much more than we realized what she was doing.’”

Our full interview with Jason Baker will be released on WrestleZone on Tuesday. Tickets for both days of screenings for The Jester 2 are available now through Fathom Entertainment.
