AJ Lee just returned to WWE, but she says it was an idea that was put out there much longer than this year.
AJ appeared on ESPN, where she discussed her in-ring return at WWE WrestlePalooza. The former Divas Champion retired in 2015 and has stayed out of the pro wrestling spotlight since then. Fans hoped she would return ever since.
AJ said her return was surreal and she didn’t anticipate the response, which was humbling, amazing and beautiful. And as AJ tells it, returning to WWE was an option for a few years, but she was comfortable in retirement.
“It’s sort of been something in the air for the past couple of years as an option. However, when I retired, I was very comfortable staying retired and I felt very complete in my career. I’ve always said to embark on a new journey, it has to feel brand new. It has to feel like I’m needed, it has to feel exciting and kinda scary.
“So, starting this new chapter on ESPN, it feels like a whole new mountain the company needs to climb. And I’m flattered that they believed I could help draw eyeballs in that way. But also, Becky [Lynch] is very interesting to me. I think she is wonderful in the ring and we have a lot of similarities. She would not be an easy person to get back in the ring with, so that was exciting.”
AJ Lee says ring rust and unpredictability might be an asset
When asked if she’s concerned about the “ring rust” that Becky and Seth Rollins have mentioned, AJ said it is legit. It’s been ten years since she wrestled and it’s scary, but it’s also an asset because she’s unpredictable.
“I might go out there and braid her hair,” AJ said. “I might bite her in the face, we might four-way kiss. Who knows what’s going to happen on ESPN?”
