Bret Hart isn’t holding back with his criticism of the late Hulk Hogan.
Hart recently took part in a live Q&A event in Germersheim, Germany. There, the WWE Hall of Famer shared some praise for names like Mr. Perfect and Roddy Piper, who he said helped transition him into being a singles star.
“[They] wanted to help me and prove to the office and promotion that I could be a big star,” Hart said (via WrestlingNews.co). “I owe a lot to Mr. Perfect. He was the first guy to really go in there and just show everybody how good I was. [Mr. Perfect] was one of my favorite guys to ever wrestle. He was the first guy then to step up and help me, and then Roddy Piper was probably the second.”
On the other hand, he criticized Hulk Hogan as being a name who did not go out of his way to help the next generation. Hart also included Jake “The Snake” Roberts in that group, but ripped Hogan by saying Hulk would rather watch a promotion die than help make a new star.
“I look back on what Roddy and Mr. Perfect did for me. And I could tell you that Hulk Hogan never did that for anybody,” Hart said. “He never helped anybody else after his time was being the top guy. He would rather see the company sink than actually come back and help make the next star… Jake Roberts is another guy that never made anybody.”
Hulk Hogan was well aware of Bret Hart’s issues with him
During a 2023 appearance on the Full Send Podcast, Hogan was asked about having any personal beef with other wrestlers. Hogan said most wrestlers spoke highly of him, but Bret Hart was the big exception.
“Bret Hart thought I basically sabotaged his career. Because Bret thought he should have been the greatest wrestler that ever lived. And he said it was my fault,” Hogan said (via USANetwork). “The Bret Hart thing I really didn’t understand because when he got pissed at me, basically I won the belt from Yokozuna at WrestleMania where Bret lost and Bret told me to go in the ring and wrestle, and I won the belt right after Bret wrestled,” Hogan explained. “And the deal was for me to drop it back to Yokozuna.
“And then Bret got in my face and said, ‘Hey, you’re supposed to drop the belt to me!’” Hogan revealed. “I said, ‘No, I’m not.’ He goes, ‘Well, yeah, you are.’ I said, ‘So let’s talk to Vince [McMahon] then.’ So we both went in and sat down and talked to Vince. Then Vince looked at Bret and said, ‘Bret, that’s what you thought you heard.’ So ever since then, he hated my guts and wanted to kill me.”
