Gunther could not care less about fans not wanting him as John Cena’s final opponent.
After sending WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg into retirement earlier this year, the Ring General is ready to close the final chapter on another legendary career: John Cena. Both men will meet at Saturday Night’s Main Event on a night that will also see NXT talent go up against main roster stars.
During a new interview with the New York Post, Gunther was asked for his thoughts on the fan response to him being John Cena’s final opponent.
“I’m not bothered,” he said. “I went out on RAW on Monday to send a few words towards [Cena] as the only chance I had, and I could feel that energy from the audience where it’s kind of like they don’t want me to stand there and claim that for me. But I enjoyed it. I think that’s great. That’s what I’m here for, to antagonize people. If they are antagonized, which they seem to be, then I succeeded, and I thrive off that.”
Backstage news on John Cena vs. Gunther — Report
According to a new report from Bryan Alvarez, Cena’s match against Gunther, in a surprise twist, is actually set to open the show. No official runtime has been set for the match. However, Alvarez noted that the pair will get “as much time” as Cena wants.
“At this point, there is no set runtime for Saturday Night’s Main Event, so everyone will get all the time they need,” Alvarez wrote (via WrestlingNews.co). “Cena vs. Gunther is currently scheduled to open the show and Cena will get as much time as he wants.”
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event is set to take place on December 13, 2025, at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Fans can read the fully updated card for the Peacock special event here.
