More WWE NXT stars speak on John Cena’s retirement.
John Cena competed in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Never Seen Seventeen faced Gunther in the main event of the December 13 event. The match ended with Cena tapping out to Gunther’s chokehold submission while smiling.
The way John Cena went out prompted a chorus of boos from the live crowd. While WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H defended Cena losing in his final match, many others, including AEW executive Jeff Jarrett, criticized the finish.
A report from Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer (via f4wonline.com) stated that WWE officials were blindsided by the reaction to the controversial ending.
“There are many people in WWE who did not agree with that decision, but the guy in charge did it. The one thing I can say is, even though they may say something different publicly, they were blindsided by that reaction,” Meltzer said.
“The idea that like we did it, we knew it was going to get heat, just the price we pay. When they were all chanting and (Triple H) went, ‘Ah, I thought it’d be louder,’ that was a defense mechanism. I don’t want to say there was no discussion of a reaction, but I was told there was no discussion of a reaction.”

NXT stars Wren Sinclair, Kendal Grey, and Ethan Page recently appeared in a live Q&A session with fans, where they were asked for their thoughts on John Cena’s final WWE match. While Grey and Sinclair gave heartfelt responses, Page leaned into his heel persona.
“I didn’t really care,” he said. “I’ll say this, though: I think I was the most ‘John Cena’ yesterday on John Cena Day because I was working while everyone else was out there celebrating. I had a job to do, so I defended my championship. That’s what I was focused on.”
