A former WWE personality recalls bizarre advice he got from a producer.
Former WWE commentator and backstage interviewer Todd Grisham was a recent guest on the INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet podcast. During the conversation, he recalled former WWE producer Kevin Dunn advising him to start smoking cigarettes to make his voice lower.
“This is a funny story. Kevin Dunn said, ‘Listen, you’re really good, but your voice is too high-pitched. You got to get it lower.’ And I go, ‘Well, what do I do?’ He goes, ‘Maybe you should start smoking cigarettes.’ I said, really? And everyone laughed. And he’s like, ‘I’m serious, you should start smoking cigarettes.’ Because JR was chain-smoking all day long. And I was like, should I start smoking cigarettes? But thank God I didn’t do it.”
Todd Grisham debuted in WWE in 2004 and worked across the company’s multiple brands over the years until his departure in 2011.
Todd Grisham Says Vince McMahon Told Him To Undersell Christian’s Return To WWE In 2009
Wrestling fans would recall the lack of enthusiasm from Todd Grisham on commentary when Christian returned to WWE back in 2009. Reacting to a post on X/Twitter, Grisham revealed that it was Vince McMahon’s order to downplay the former World Heavyweight Champion’s return.
“Right before I walked out of the Gorillia position before the show. Vince McMahon called me over and said ‘When Christian walks out..don’t get excited at all simply say “it’s Christian” and that’s it. Understand me?’ Me: ‘Yes sir,’” Todd Grisham said in a post.
Grisham also reiterated the same explanation during his interview with Chris Van Vliet. He said he tried to make it sound like he was stunned seeing Christian’s return, and that he received a lot of criticism from fans for that moment.
