CM Punk Explains Why Bad Guys Are Cooler Than Heroes

CM Punk has explained why he’s always been drawn to playing villains, both on screen and in the wrestling ring.

Punk has quietly built an acting resume alongside his wrestling career, appearing in seven films and several television projects. His most recent role came in Zootopia 2, where he voices one of the zebra buddy cops, Zebro Zebrowski, alongside Roman Reigns, who voices Zebro Zebraxton.

He is also set to appear in the upcoming film Night Patrol, which hits theaters on Friday, January 16. In Night Patrol, Punk steps away from playing a good guy and leans back into familiar territory, portraying a villain.

Speaking with ComicBookMovie.com in a recent interview, Punk opened up about why he enjoys playing antagonists so much. “It’s one of those where you’re looking around like, I would do this for free, but they’re paying me,” Punk said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Punk then explained why villains tend to stand out more than heroes. “There’s something about villains that I think are — Villains are often times, for lack of a better word, sexier than the good guys. Villains get to do fun stuff. Villains got the better weapons, the better outfits.”

He even used a pop-culture comparison to make his point.

“You know, Cobra is cooler than GI Joe. But, this movie really kind of turns that on its side and explores it, like who really are the villains here.” [H/T: Fightful]

While Punk has portrayed a babyface since returning to WWE in 2023, longtime fans remember his legendary heel runs fondly. From leading the Straight Edge Society to his dominant WWE Championship reign between 2012 and 2013, Punk built a reputation as one of wrestling’s most compelling heels.
