A WWE Hall of Famer reveals the one thing he regrets not doing during his induction speech.
WWE legend and former Intercontinental Champion The Godfather was a recent guest on The Velvet Ropes with SoCal Val. During the conversation, he revealed that, contrary to what many believe, his wife, Denise Wright, was the one who came up with his infamous Godfather character and not Vince McMahon.
“Believe it or not, the whole Godfather character was my wife’s idea. All of it, not Vince. She was basically like, ‘If we could find a way for these people to see the real you… we got something.’ So she came up with the character. She had all the outfits made, all the jewelry made. She had a hat company sending us hats… I just went out there and did the silliness.”
Speaking further, The Godfather looked back on his 2016 WWE Hall of Fame induction and expressed regret over not mentioning his wife during the speech.
“My high ass gets up there having fun, not writing anything down… I went through the whole thing… As soon as I got off stage, I went, ‘Did I mention my wife?’ Dude, I went into panic mode. I did not mention my wife’s name in my Hall of Fame speech… She’s wife number three, we’ve been married 25 years… I feel so bad,” the WWE legend said.
The WWE Hall of Famer said he was supposed to be part of the nWo
Speaking in the same interview, The Godfather revealed that he was originally supposed to be a part of the nWo. However, financial disagreements prevented him from signing with WCW at the time.
“The only time that I was going to… we had the deal was, is the nWo… I was supposed to join the nWo,” the WWE legend said. “I was re-signing as The Godfather. We’re working out deals. And so they gave me a call, and we worked out a three-year deal. Alright?
“So now I’m waiting for the contract to come. And I’m like calling the people that I need to talk to call. They’re not calling me back. Then I look up and I see Virgil. Well, I was supposed to be a bodyguard for the first year. In the last two years, I was going to wrestle on this contract, and so they decided to go with Virgil instead of me.
“My price was way higher than Virgil’s. I think they just didn’t want to pay me that much money to do what I was going to do. I don’t know, but Virgil took it. So that’s the only time that I even came close to going anywhere,” the WWE Hall of Famer said.
