WWE Hall Of Famer Mark Henry recently revealed that his wrestling career nearly came to an abrupt end — until a blunt warning from Chris Benoit changed his mind.
Speaking on the Feb. 23, 2026, episode of Busted Open Podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer reflected on a difficult stretch in the 2000s when injuries and self-doubt pushed him toward walking away from the business.
Henry explained that a dislocated shoulder just weeks before WrestleMania left him physically sidelined and mentally drained.
“If I hadn’t had Chris Benoit, I would’ve quit the business,” Henry admitted. “I dislocated my shoulder right before Mania, three weeks out.”
The recovery process took a deeper toll than the injury itself. Henry described going through surgery and rehab, only to find himself emotionally spiraling.
“I’d pass a mirror and start crying. I felt like I let the boys down, I let the business down,” he said. At one point, he told Benoit, “I don’t think my heart is in it.”
Mark Henry Credits Chris Benoit for Saving His Career
That’s when Benoit delivered the message Henry still remembers years later.
“He said, ‘I will come to your house and fight you every day if you don’t get your a*s back in here,’” Henry recalled.
The threat was half tough love, half locker-room reality check. Henry’s response was simple: “Yeah, I don’t think I want to fight Chris every day.”
Henry returned to work and did not suffer another injury for three years. He later called that conversation one of the most important of his career.
In previous interviews, Henry has also spoken about Benoit’s personal struggles and the tragedy that followed, making clear he does not excuse what happened. Still, in this chapter of his story, Mark Henry credits Chris Benoit with keeping him in the fight — and ultimately in the Hall of Fame.
Sometimes in wrestling, a wake-up call hits harder than a clothesline. For Henry, it was the push he needed to stay in the ring.
