Cody Rhodes says today’s pro wrestlers might be a little bit too sensitive about what fans are shouting at them.
The WWE star appeared on Mostly Sports with Brandon Walker to promote this weekend’s Elimination Chamber premium live event. During the conversation, Rhodes and Walker debated today’s wrestlers being too sensitive to fan insults. Rhodes agreed with the notion, explaining that wrestlers should be able to take it. Rhodes pointed out that it’s supposed to be a fun, almost cathartic experience for the fans in the crowd.
“We, all of the sudden, have gotten so sensitive to what fans say,” Cody Rhodes said. “There’s no code—outside of moral and ethical craziness. You buy a ticket, there’s no code of conduct, you can tell somebody they suck. You can tell somebody they’re fat, you can—it doesn’t matter.”
Rhodes highlighted how he’s dealt with plenty of insults despite being one of WWE’s top babyfaces. He also pointed out how the business has changed since his grandfather took his father, Dusty Rhodes, to events as a child in Texas.
Cody Rhodes doesn’t think there needs to be so many “rules” for a wrestling show
“You should hear the stuff that’s being yelled at me in the ring, in the middle of trying to give a heartfelt speech about Terry Funk or something like that. It’s a fun event for fans to blow off steam,” Rhodes continued. “My grandfather, who was bringing Dusty to the shows, only came to try and fight the heels. He never committed, but he was in the corner just yelling at Fritz [Von Erich], yelling at—that’s what he wanted to do.
“I know that’s a controversial take that we should all be like-minding our P’s and Q’s,” Cody Rhodes continued. “But if you’re a good upstanding human being, I don’t think you need to give yourself a 35 rules to attend a wrestling show.”
Later in the interview, Rhodes again questioned if talent is being too sensitive. He noted that they’re making “bank” in WWE now, so it might be time to put their personal feelings aside and play the role.
