CM Punk and Roman Reigns had another intense promo battle on WWE RAW this week.
The segment turned very personal. During the exchange, Reigns mocked Punk and promised to retire him at WWE WrestleMania 42. Punk ended the show with a shocking line, telling Reigns he would bury him next to his late father, Sika Anoaʻi.
On Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray strongly questioned that comment. “The last line, for me, felt very forced. Maybe not forced, but it felt like it didn’t belong. It didn’t match the rest of the verbiage of the promo.”
He questioned the meaning behind it. “‘I’m going to bury you next to your father.’ Are we to believe that CM Punk is going to kill Roman Reigns?” Co-host Dave LaGreca defended the moment. He said Punk wanted to shock Reigns and leave him speechless.
Ray then asked, “Why didn’t Roman immediately blast Punk?” LaGreca answered that Reigns looked stunned. Ray also stressed how serious Samoan wrestlers are about family. “I still don’t understand, other than for shock value, why Punk would say it.”
“In the promo, we learned that Punk hangs out with Jimmy and Jey, pals around with Jimmy and Jey. Do you know anything about Samoans and how seriously, in real life, they take family? If you f*ck with one Samoan, you’ve have f*cked with them all especially in the pro wrestling business. I can’t see Jimmy and Jey Uso ever playing tiddlywinks with CM Punk again.”
Bully Ray says every Samoan in WWE should be pissed at CM Punk
Bully Ray added, “Every Samoan in that company should be completely pissed off at CM Punk for bringing up one of the patriarchs. I mean, he’s part of the Samoan dynasty, the Bloodline legend. So right under the High Chief Peter Maivia comes Afa and Sika. And even if you’re a Samoan in WWE and you don’t necessarily love Roman, you just talked about cousin Sika, Uncle Sika, and the fact that he’s dead and under the ground. You don’t bring up the name like that.”
He added that Punk’s comment may have created shock value, but WWE now needs to follow up on it properly. Ray even compared the situation to a past tense moment involving Dwayne Johnson and Triple H, saying you simply “don’t go there” when it comes to family.
“Punk went there. Yeah, you got your shock-and-awe moment, but they need to follow up on it. To me, it was a little too heavy, too quickly.” He even explained what might have justified Punk’s comment. If Reigns had lightly mentioned Punk’s late dog Larry.
“If he would have made a slight reference about Larry, not not glaringly negative or mentioning that Larry’s no longer with us, just mentioning Larry’s name alone, then I would have understood Punk coming back over the top with that line. But the line, Dave, my reaction when Punk hit that line, how do you think I reacted to it? I don’t know how. I looked at my TV and I went, ‘No.'”
