Royce Keys has been largely absent from WWE television since his Royal Rumble appearance earlier this year, prompting fans to wonder when the powerhouse will finally step back into the spotlight.
The former standout, who debuted during the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble match with the main roster, has not appeared on televised programming since that moment. However, multiple backstage updates suggest the situation may be less mysterious than it initially appears.
While speculation online suggested WWE had no clear direction for Keys, reports indicate the company has continued working with him behind the scenes.
Keys has reportedly been present backstage at several SmackDown tapings. Moreover, he has competed in dark matches, including a bout against Nathan Frazer.
According to Fightful, WWE has also filmed content involving Keys. Details about the footage, whether it is a vignette, a storyline setup, or a character introduction, have not come to light.
Royce Keys Being ‘Acclimated’ to WWE Production
A new update from PWInsider provides further clarity on the situation. According to Mike Johnson, WWE sources indicated that Keys has begun acclimation to the company’s production system and backstage workflow.
One individual familiar with the process explained that new signings frequently go through this adjustment period before appearing regularly on television.
“They noted that 99% of talents who are hired go through that process,” the source said.
The focus right now appears to be helping Keys understand WWE’s production environment. WWE’s production emerges notably different from other wrestling promotions.
The company reportedly wants him to be comfortable with its pacing, presentation, and broadcast structure before committing to a full-on-screen rollout.
Internally, belief persists that Keys ultimately lands at SmackDown. At one point, a potential feud with Damian Priest had begun taking shape. However, the idea did not gain traction as creative plans shifted heading into WrestleMania 42.
Despite the delay, Keys has remained visible through appearances on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” series and through in-ring work before SmackDown tapings.
For now, the message from backstage sources seems clear — the company isn’t pressing pause on Keys, it’s simply preparing the stage before the music hits.
