AEW star Kenny Omega appeared at Capcom Cup 12 in Tokyo, Japan, in a highly praised Street Fighter cosplay.
The 12th edition of the annual Street Fighter tournament, the Capcom Cup, is officially underway at the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena in Tokyo, Japan. To kick off the opening ceremonies, former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega appeared as a special guest, cosplaying the character Alex.
Kenny Omega recently did motion capture work for Street Fighter 6. He plays Alex, a character that first appeared in the 1997 arcade game Street Fighter III: New Generation. Alex will be introduced as a DLC character as part of the third season pass on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
Fans praised Kenny Omega’s cosplay, pointing out the costume’s accuracy. The official Street Fighter X/Twitter account thanked Omega for appearing at the event and for his contributions to bring Alex to life.
“For the past few years, we’ve worked closely with @KennyOmegamanX on bringing Alex to life and we want to thank him for being at Capcom Cup 12! Just a few more days before Alex releases on March 17!” they posted.
Since the Capcom Cup 12 will run from March 11 through March 15 in Tokyo, he won’t be at today’s AEW Dynamite and Collision tapings at San Jose, California. His availability for the AEW Revolution pay-per-view on March 15 is also in question. However, the company hasn’t booked him for the event.
Kenny Omega revealed how he landed his Street Fighter 6 role
During a recent interview with IGN, Kenny Omega revealed that he got the opportunity to do motion capture for Alex as a result of a simple misunderstanding on his part. Capcom, the Street Fighter 6 developers, approached Omega during the 2023 Tokyo Game Show about becoming a representative (doing cosplays) for the season three content.
They originally intended to use some of Kenny Omega’s moves in Alex’s moveset, but the AEW star misinterpreted it as getting to do motion capture for the character. However, Capcom liked the idea.
“When the news broke and they told me, we signed the NDAs and we know who the characters are and Alex will, in fact, be one of them. And they said, ‘For you being such a good sport, it’d be cool if we put a move of yours in,’ maybe one or two or a taunt or something,” Kenny Omega said.
“I had said, ‘Wow, that would be great. I just don’t know when I could fit that into my schedule to do the mocap for it.’ And they’d said, ‘Oh, wait, you do the mocap for it?’ I said, ‘Yeah, is that what you were talking about, or no?’ They said, ‘Oh my, if you would do the mocap for it, that would be awesome.’ And so a misunderstanding on my part is what led to me actually going to the studio and doing a slew of mocap for the character,” Kenny Omega revealed.
