Street Fighter 6 Director Spent Two Years Rewriting ‘Pretty Rough’ Movie Script

Takayuki Nakayama believes the upcoming Street Fighter movie will hit all the right notes after he helped rewrite the script.

Capcom’s official Street Fighter account on X/Twitter shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the set of the live-action movie in March. The video features Takayuki Nakayama, the game director of Street Fighter 6, visiting the set to ensure that the fight choreography, costumes, and other elements properly honor the game’s legacy. However, he played an even bigger role, as Nakayama revealed to Dexerto that he spent two years helping rewrite the script after the first draft he received was “pretty rough.”

Takayuki Nakayama believes the upcoming Street Fighter movie will hit all the right notes after he helped rewrite the script.

“To be honest, the first script I received was pretty rough — probably exactly the way people are imagining it would be,” he admitted. “So, we spent about two years turning it into what it is now.

“The director is also really great, so we worked together with a great production team, and the actors are all highly motivated. And because I’m directly involved in the process, I have absolutely no worries. I mean, I just watched it and thought it was fun.

He addressed fan reaction to the Street Fighter movie trailer

Talking about the fan reaction to the movie trailer, Takayuki Nakayama noted that while adapting a game into a live-action film is incredibly difficult, the crew was fully committed to doing the Street Fighter series justice.

“Personally, I feel like the reaction has been really positive,” he said. “You know, adapting a game directly into a video work is, as you said, incredibly difficult. Everyone has their own personal feelings about the series, so I’m sure there were various opinions out there.

“But the director and the whole team really took the time to break down what makes Street Fighter tick and reflect on the experiences that shaped us growing up; the people making it are Street Fighter fans themselves. So, you can rest easy on that front,” he said.

The Street Fighter movie will hit the screens on October 16, 2026. It features Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji playing the main characters, Ken and Ryu. An ensemble cast includes reigning Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes as Guile and World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns as Akuma.
