While the overall WWE WrestleMania 42 card continues taking shape, Gunther‘s path to it has not. According to a new report, there is a specific reason.
BodySlam+ reports that Gunther’s recent feud with Dragon Lee was intended to transition him to one with Rey Mysterio, a fellow luchador and LWO member, that would include a match at “The Show of Shows.” Due to Mysterio’s pre-Royal Rumble injury, however, Gunther’s creative direction got derailed. At it stands, Gunther’s status for WrestleMania 42 is now unknown, unless doctors clear Mysterio to compete at the April 18 and 19 premium live event.
Previous reports indicated that WWE considered Mysterio, Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar as options to face “The Career Killer” at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. Earlier this week, WWE confirmed that Lesnar and Femi would take on each other after the latter answered the former’s open challenge.
Mysterio fractured his ribs while wrestling Austin Theory on the January 26 episode of RAW. He still went on to compete in the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble, though WWE later wrote him off television by citing serious injuries sustained in the Royal Rumble match.
Regarding Gunther, WWE fans last saw him on the March 2 edition of Raw, in which he defeated Dragon Lee. Prior to that, Gunther notably retired “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles by beating him at the Royal Rumble premium live event. Should Mysterio by cleared to compete at WrestleMania 42, it is unclear if his planned match with Gunther will also be career-threatening.
