Former WWE star Tyrus shared how his weight loss journey in wrestling helped him earn a WWE contract.
Tyrus, known as Brodus Clay in WWE, returned in 2012 with a new look and connected well with fans. However, WWE did not push him fully, and he was released in 2014. He later worked in TNA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance before moving into media.
Before becoming Brodus Clay, he revealed he went through a tremendous weight loss journey that led to him earning a WWE contract.
Tyrus says he was asked to lose 50 pounds for an opportunity
Speaking on his podcast Planet Tyrus, he explained how his journey started with a chance meeting with Tommy Dreamer at a nightclub, which led to a WWE tryout. He described the tryout as extremely difficult and said trainers pushed him hard to see if he would quit.
Tyrus said he stayed focused and refused to give up despite the pressure. After the tryout, John Laurinaitis offered a potential contract, on one condition.
“I think that meant something to them. And so I got a call, and John Laurinaitis walked over. He was like, ‘Hey kid, I’ll tell you what. You lose 50 lbs, I’ll give you a deal.'”
“And I was like, ‘Yes, sir.’ And I worked my ass off. And I actually lost 75. And then I get the call saying, ‘Hey, you got a deal, and you’re going to report to McDonough, Georgia, and you’re going to start training.’ And I couldn’t, I could not believe it was happening.”
