For weeks, fans were wondering what was next for Gunther on the road to WrestleMania 42. After retiring both John Cena and AJ Styles in big matches, he hadn’t been seen on TV lately. With WrestleMania coming up in Las Vegas, fans were curious about WWE’s plan for him, and his latest confrontation with Seth Rollins on RAW might just have answered the question.
It was reported earlier that Gunther was supposed to face Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. But Mysterio forced WWE to change plans, leaving Gunther’s status unclear for a while. That changed during a chaotic segment with Paul Heyman, Adam Pearce, and Seth Rollins.
Gunther attacks Seth Rollins and points to WrestleMania sign on WWE RAW
On the March 30, 2026, episode of RAW, Heyman engaged in a promo, discussing the newly crowned champions and his legacy. He talked about the kind of “humanitarian” he is and how he wanted the fans to enjoy Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar on RAW. He then blamed General Manager Adam Pearce for ruining the plans.
Just then, the RAW General Manager came out with big news that Seth Rollins had been medically cleared and that all charges against him had been dropped.
Before Heyman could react, Seth Rollins suddenly came inside the ring and hit his former comrade with a steel chair. He was even ready to do even more damage and set Heyman up for a Stomp. But just then, he got pulled outside the ring.
Gunther returned.
Gunther attacked Rollins outside the ring and immediately locked in his sleeper hold. He choked Rollins out on the announcer’s desk, leaving him completely unconscious.
Gunther then stood tall over Rollins, even though he was bleeding during the fight. Then he grabbed Rollins’ head, looked at the WrestleMania sign in the arena, and pointed at it.
That made his message clear. Gunther is going after Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42. It’s a big match that no one really expected.
Later, Pearce made the match official during the episode.
After weeks of uncertainty, Gunther now has his direction. However, WWE might still need to find a good enough reason for the former WWE Champion to attack Rollins and build some hype around the new, unexpected rivalry.
