Our WWE Raw results for tonight include Gunther and Seth Rollins under the same roof, Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi are set to appear, and Roman Reigns’ special message for CM Punk on the final Raw before WrestleMania. Here’s our review and grades for tonight’s show, live from The Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.
WWE Raw Card:
- Roman Reigns’ special message for CM Punk
- Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi are set to appear
- Gunther and Seth Rollins under the same roof
WWE Raw Results:
The show kicks off with a videotaped promo from Roman Reigns dumping on CM Punk for being a fraud. Reigns says Punk is everything Reigns says he is. The fact that a Punter, who Reigns actually likes, talked greasily about Punk says everything that needs to be said. A Punter would never do that to Reigns. Either Punk tells the truth tonight, or Reigns will.
Grade: C+
If Reigns isn’t going to be there, this is lame; if he is going to be there, this is pointless.
Contract Signing Folie à Deux
Raw GM Adam Pearce and Triple H are in the ring. To ensure this match actually happens, they are going to have Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi sign the contract separately. Paul Heyman comes out on the ramp and introduces Lesnar. Lesnar signs. Heyman says the contract is a Nigerian death warrant. Lesnar grabs the mic and says after WrestleMania, no one will know his (Femi) name. Heyman says there will be a loser at WrestleMania, and it will be Oba Femi.
Grade: C+
You know… Normally, a common-sense segment like this would be right up this writer’s alley, but having contract signings is dumb to start with, so being forced to have essentially three of the same segment for the same match is groan-inducing.
Charlotte Flair w/Alexa Bliss vs. Lyra Valkyria w/Bayley
Flair controls the match early. Flair steps on Valkyria’s stomach. Valkyria gets upset and gets in Flair’s face. Flair floors Valkyria with a chop. Valkyria backflips out of the corner and lands a boot. Flair lands a headkick. Valkyria blocks a boot from Flair on the apron. Valkyria sweeps the leg and lands a rope dropkick. Flair avoids a dive from Valkyria and nails her with a kick to the face.
Flair lands a moonsault. Valkyria kicks out. After a strike exchange, Valkyria gets a long two-count after a fisherman’s buster. Flair escapes Nightwing and tosses Valkyria out of the ring into Bayley. Flair rolls up Valkyria. From outside the ring, Bayley yanks Flair’s foot, allowing Valkyria to reverse the roll up into a pin of her own. Valkyria gets the three count.
Winner- Lyra Valkyria
After the match, Flair gets in Bayley’s face. Both women are separated.
Grade: B
This was a quality wrestling match. No fluff, just two women attempting to cripple each other. Fun stuff. Go out of your way to watch this.
THE Champion
The Women’s World Champion Stephanie Vaquer is in the ring with Cathly Kelly. As Kelly is asking a question, Liv Morgan attacks Vaquer from behind. Vaquer crashes into Kelly. Officials and security break them up. Morgan craps on Vaquer’s mother and calls Vaquer a b*tch. Vaquer responds in Spanish and rushes the ring. Both women are separated again. Morgan gets dragged away, screaming that Vaquer is done.
Grade: B
It’s amazing how many of these WrestleMania feuds are on sight. Either Morgan and Vaquer are the best actors on the roster, or these two legit hate each other.
The Usos and LA Knight vs. The MFTs
The Usos clear the ring early. Jey lands a dive, where he almost totally overshoots JC Mateo. After the break, LA Knight gets the hot tag and clears the ring. Everyone lands a big move. Sikoa catches Jey during a dive and slams him on the commentary desk. Tama Tonga walks in through the crowd. Sikoa yells at Tama, asking him where he has been. Tama just stares at Sikoa. Back in the ring, Knight drops Loa with the BFT for the win.
Winners- The Usos and LA Knight
Grade: C+
Standard TV six-man match here. Nothing of note other than the bit with Tama towards the finish. Tama is the standout in the MFTs, so his splitting off makes sense. The rub is, will anyone care when it happens? Have they sown enough animosity between Sikoa and Tama for this breakup to make sense? This writer isn’t sure… Let us know what you think in the comments.
The Ring General
Before Gunther can speak, Seth Rollins hops the barricade and attacks Gunther. Gunther slides out. Rollins grabs a mic and demands that Gunther be a man, walk to the ring, and tell him why he wants to fight him. If this isn’t about Paul Heyman, why is Gunther doing it? Gunther rolls back in. Gunther tells Rollins that he’s pissing him off.
For years, Rollins strutted around here like he was the best. Rollins isn’t. Gunther is the best. Instead of coming at Gunther when he was the World Champion, Rollins was a useful idiot for Heyman. Rollins and Gunther brawl. Gunther falls out of the ring. Rollins misses a stomp on the ring steps. Gunther escapes through the crowd.
Grade: B
This seemed like it was going to be a retread of essentially every angle we have seen so far tonight, but they switched it up, and Gunther and Rollins were able to cut pretty convincing promos between throwing hands.
IYO SKY vs. Kairi Sane w/Asuka
Sane attacks SKY as soon as the bell rings. Sane works over SKY. SKY fires up. Sane retreats out of the ring. SKY lands a moonsault off the barricade. After the break, SKY gets hung in a tree of woe outside the ring. SKY knocks Sane off the top. Asuka runs down to ringside and slams SKY’s head into the ring post. Rhea Ripley hit the ring and attacked Asuka. WWE Women’s Champion Cargill appears and clocks Ripley. Asuka and Cargill beat down Ripley. In the confusion, Asuka knocks SKY off the top. Sane rolls up SKY for the win.
Winner- Kairi Sane
Grade: C+
Solid match that needed more time to develop. Adding Ripley and Cargill to this was a nice touch. Both of these feuds are clearly intertwined. This will lead to a tag match on SmackDown, most likely, and hopefully a singles match between SKY and Asuka at Mania.
Contract Signing 3: Electric Boogaloo
Pearce and Triple H are in the ring. Oba Femi is out next to sign the contract for his match against Lesnar at WrestleMania. Femi signs the contract. Heyman appears on the ramp. The crowd chants for Femi. Heyman says he’s never seen anyone come across as the biggest star in the industry as fast as Oba Femi. Heyman says Femi is the most violent person to come into the WWE since Brock Lesnar. Heyman lists various other ways Femi is like Lesnar. At WrestleMania, everything Femi has built comes crashing down.
Oba Femi will be conquered by Brock Lesnar. There is no shame in this loss for Femi. Femi is in the real main event of WrestleMania. Heyman gives Femi his word that when Femi needs to rebuild his career after he loses to Lesnar, Heyman’s door will be open to Oba Femi. Femi says it’s taking everything in him not to come down there and beat him down. If Femi beats Heyman up, the physical pain will pass, but the mental pain when Lesnar loses will not.
They issued an open challenge without a care for who would accept it. It’s time to put an end to the Beast. Heyman had been a good mouthpiece, but he’s never been an honest one. If Heyman were here, he would come out and announce that his client is afraid of Oba Femi. Femi is the one. He’s always been the one. Femi knows it, the crowd knows it, and at WrestleMania, Heyman will know it too.
Grade: B
No notes. Femi COOKED here tonight. All jokes about them doing 576645 contract signing segments in two weeks, this segment was the one.
Je’Von Evans and Dragon Lee vs. JD McDonagh and Rusev
Dragon Lee eventually gets the pin after a Styles Clash to JD McDonagh.
Winners- Je’Von Evans and Dragon Lee
After the match, Rusev attacks Evans and Lee. Rey Mysterio tries to make the save, but Rusev floors him with a lariat. Penta is out next. Penta lands a flurry, but springboards into a Machka kick. Rusev lays everyone out.
Grade: B-
Fun tag match. Rusev is clearly not winning that ladder match, so they had to make him look strong here.
The OTC
Roman Reigns tells Sacramento to acknowledge him. CM Punk’s music hits. Punk appears in the crowd. Punk takes a loooong time getting over the barricade and ends up standing on the commentary desk. Punk calls Reigns’ video at the beginning of the show a political smear campaign. He’s going to take a moment to respond, and Reigns can tell Punk when he’s telling lies. As Punk starts to get in the ring, Reigns tells Punk that if he gets in the ring, they won’t need the mics. Punk stands on the apron and says he’s been thinking about this for a while, and he hates Reigns. Why? Because he envies Reigns.
Reigns was handed everything that Punk ever wanted. Punk lists all the reasons he hates Reigns. He hates that he feels this way. Punk puts over Reigns’ father, Sika, and apologizes for invoking his name in vain. Reigns says that the truest thing Punk has ever said, till the last part. Reigns hates Punk. Why? Because of the relationship Punk has with fans. Reigns wants the fans to chant for him for ten years after he leaves. On Sunday, it won’t be “and still,” it will be, “and new!” On Sunday, the Tribal Chief takes back over, and Punk will acknowledge Reigns.
Grade: B-
This finished strongly but was way too long. This reminded me of the scene from “Sorry to Bother” when they were arguing-complimenting each other.
