WATCH: Cody Rhodes Suffers Nasty Eye Injury at WWE WrestleMania 42

Cody Rhodes walked away with a brutal eye wound at WrestleMania 42.

The American Nightmare put his Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Randy Orton in the main event of WrestleMania 42 Saturday.

After making an incredible entrance that featured a nod to his Stardust gimmick, Rhodes was blindsided by Pat McAfee with a cheap shot before the opening bell.

McAfee was quickly taken out by Jelly Roll with an elbow drop and was stretchered to the back, only to resurface in the closing moments. However, this time, Orton dropped him with an RKO out of nowhere.

The distraction allowed Rhodes to capitalize, hitting Orton with Cross Rhodes to secure the win. The celebration was cut short, however, as Orton struck Rhodes with the championship belt. The Viper then capped off the assault by hitting his former student with a devastating punt kick to the head.

Rhodes was left with a visibly swollen eye after the match, seemingly the result of Orton’s punt kick. The champion also needed assistance getting to his feet but ultimately managed to walk to the back on his own.

Footage from the WrestleMania post-show showed Rhodes being checked by doctors. WWE has not confirmed whether he suffered any serious injuries following the assault, but the champion was clearly battered and bruised after going to war with his former mentor.
