Andrew Yang supports an idea raised by Kevin Nash.
Following reported pay cuts within WWE, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently suggested that talent work toward unionizing, noting SAG-AFTRA as a potential outlet.
Former Democratic Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang has since backed this idea. Given that WWE stars are involved in scripted programming on a weekly basis, he believes they actually should already be a part of SAG-AFTRA.
“Nash is right – WWE wrestlers participate in highly-rated scripted programming every week. They should be SAG-AFTRA members already,” Yang wrote on X.
SAG-AFTRA, a merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists labor unions, operates as a united front to negotiate wages, working conditions, and health and pension benefits. The organization additionally aims to preserve and expand its members’ opportunities, while also protecting them against unauthorized use of their work.
Yang has spoken out about WWE’s labor practices in the past, citing them as ones rooted in greed. Yang further pushed for change regarding WWE stars being classified as “independent contractors.”
In recent weeks, WWE has asked several of its talent to take upwards of a 50% pay cut, some of whom have reportedly accepted it. Which exact stars WWE approached about the matter largely remains unknown. Former WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were amongst them, however, and declined to take on a lowered salary, which led to them mutually departing from WWE.
