Finn Balor was almost known as “Rux,” but Triple H was afraid it might make the WWE Universe want to work.
Before he debuted in WWE, Finn Balor was known as Fergal Devitt, his real name, or Prince Devitt. During a new interview on What’s Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon, Balor shared how he was given a list of potential names when he first arrived at the WWE Performance Center in 2014. He chose Finn Balor because of its roots in Gaelic mythology. Balor noted that he combined Balor, the one-eyed Demon King, with Finn McCool.
Balor revealed that one potential option was “Liv,” a name favored by WWE’s Paul “Triple H” Levesque.
“I’ve never said this to anyone else. One of those names, and Paul was especially leaning towards this name, was Liv,” Balor shared (H/T Wrestling Attitude).
Liv would later be used by Liv Morgan, the current WWE Women’s World Champion, but Balor said there was another name that almost made the cut. According to Balor, “Rux” was on the list. However, Triple H quickly shut it down because it was too similar to RuPaul.
Who is RuPaul?
“Rux was on there. But then Paul said, no, no, no. People think of RuPaul,” Balor explained. “I remember him specifically saying that.”
Balor said he was unfamiliar with RuPaul, the American drag queen who hosts the popular reality television series RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul is considered to be the world’s most famous drag queen, and he is also known for his 90s hit music video “Supermodel (You Better Work).”
The name was eventually dropped, and Balor settled on the name he currently uses today.
