Chad Gable has shared new details about the injury that forced him out of action during the best run of his WWE career. In the first episode of his new documentary, Gable explained how a nagging injury eventually revealed a much bigger problem that required surgery and months of recovery.
At the time, Gable was one of WWE’s busiest performers. He was appearing regularly on WWE TV and portrayed El Grande Americano, working in multiple promotions. Everything seemed to be going well until injuries started catching up with him.
Chad Gable reveals how a match with Gunther started his injury troubles
Gable admitted that the injury had massive consequences. The injury came at a time when he was putting out his best performances ever weekly.
“Obviously, there’s never a good time to get injured. It’s never like, ‘Oh, well, the timing worked out on that.’ But to me specifically, this timing was especially hurtful because I was on the role of a lifetime, in my opinion, career-wise. I was having these incredible matches that I’ve been waiting to have with guys like Vikingo, Dragon Lee, Penta, all these awesome luchadors. The storytelling we were able to do, the physicality that was going on week to week and it just seemed to increase every week and get better and more intense and it all just comes to an end just like that,” Gable said.
Since he hadn’t dealt with a serious injury like this before, Chad Gable struggled to come to terms with it. Gable then sought out his well-wishers and fellow WWE stars Sami Zayn, Bayley, and Finn Bálor. They encouraged him to make the most of his time away from the ring, spend quality time with his family, and not feel guilty about taking a break, which wrestlers rarely get the chance to do.
Gable said that the issues began during a WWE live event tour in the United Kingdom in October 2024. While wrestling Gunther, he injured his right arm and believed he had damaged his right biceps tendon. The injury wasn’t serious enough for immediate surgery, but the pain never fully went away.
For months, Gable continued wrestling despite dealing with discomfort, especially when straightening his arm. Eventually, he decided to get MRI scans on his shoulder, bicep, and tricep.
He expected the scans to show the usual wear and tear that comes with years of wrestling. But surprisingly, the biggest issue wasn’t in the arm he had been worried about. Doctors found that Gable had a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder. Moreover, the injury was serious enough to require surgery.
Along with tendinitis in his right elbow, Gable had a tear in his bicep and a partial rotator cuff tear on the right side. However, the torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder was the injury that needed immediate surgical repair.
