Dustin Rhodes Close to Getting Cleared for AEW Return Amid Retirement Plans

Dustin Rhodes appears to be nearing the next chapter of his storied wrestling career after providing a positive update on his recovery from double knee replacement surgery.

While the AEW veteran has not yet received medical clearance, his latest comments suggest a return to the ring could be approaching.

The 57-year-old has been sidelined since July 2025, when he last competed against Kyle Fletcher on AEW Collision.

Since then, Rhodes has remained active behind the scenes in AEW while working through what he described as a challenging rehabilitation process.

Dustin Rhodes shares recovery update and retirement timeline

Speaking on the What Happened When podcast, Rhodes reflected on the road back from surgery. Moreover, he hinted that receiving medical clearance may not be far away.

“So, I went and I got double knee replacements and it was a hard couple months. The first two months were pretty bad.”

He credited his wife for helping him through recovery. Rhodes also admitted that staying active was a key part of the process.

“I’ve been back to work a little bit for coaching. Not quite cleared yet, but I think we’re very close. And I can’t wait to see what I can do for the next year and a half, two years before I retire.”

Rhodes was previously spotted backstage at AEW’s Fresno taping in March working as a producer. He was also seen running the ropes before the show. This emerged as a sign that he was progressing toward a return and testing how his body responded physically.

Despite his optimism, Rhodes admitted some uncertainty lingers about how his knees will hold up once he steps back between the ropes.

“Oh, yeah. Yeah. Hopefully. Hopefully, very soon. It’s driving me crazy right now.”

He added that fellow wrestling legend Sting reassured him, saying, “You’re going to be fine.”

Rhodes also revealed he has discussed retirement-match ideas with AEW President Tony Khan. While keeping most details private, he shared a desire to wrestle his final bout as “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes without face paint.

Now 38 years into his career and aiming to reach the 40-year mark, Rhodes appears closer than ever to trading recovery sessions for ring ropes once again. For a veteran who has spent decades proving his resilience, the final countdown may be approaching — but not quite the final bell.
