Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Reacts to Missing Oscar Nomination For ‘The Smashing Machine’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shares his thoughts on missing an Oscar nomination for The Smashing Machine.

During his recent conversation with Esquire‘s Ryan D’Agostino, actor and WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared that it would’ve been incredible to get an Oscar nomination for The Smashing Machine. However, since that didn’t happen, he said it didn’t make him think it didn’t matter, but the snub lit a fire in his spine to get back to work and earn the honor through his future work.

“It would have been incredible to get nominated for an Oscar. … I realized very quickly that it’s a rare thing to reach this pinnacle where you’re even having these conversations. And it’s exciting! It would have been amazing. I wish it happened. But it didn’t. But in no uncertain terms did I ever think, Oh, that doesn’t matter. I always thought it mattered. And it has lit a fire in my spine”—The Rock laughs suddenly, as if surprised by his own artful phrase, then is serious again—”which is: Let’s go back to work.”

The Rock played MMA legend Mark Kerr and earned tons of praise for his performance. However, the movie didn’t do well at the box office, earning around $21.1 million against a production budget of $50 million. The film received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Performance by a Male Actor (Drama) for The Rock, and Best Supporting Female Actor in a Motion Picture for co-star Emily Blunt. However, they didn’t win the awards.

The movie received one Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but the award went to Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey for Frankenstein.
