Hulk Hogan has a noted history as a movie star outside of his wrestling career. One time, a haircut required for a role made its way into a WCW storyline.
During an episode of WCW‘s Monday Nitro in February 1995, Hogan was jumped by The Dungeon of Doom, and had his mustache shaved off on live TV. Obviously, Hogan’s mustache is iconic, so the move came as a legitimate shock to fans.
Hulk Hogan’s mustache is almost as iconic as his red-and-yellow attire or his bleached yellow hair. Hogan’s clean-shaven appearance was surprising, but he’d done it for a couple of movie roles in the early ’90s.
In a 2025 episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff talked about the moment and said he had no real idea why it happened. Bischoff guessed it had to do with a movie or some other opportunity.
“I’m not 100% sure, but I would bet a lot of money it had to do with a movie role or a commercial opportunity, because otherwise there’s no way he’s doing that,” said Bischoff (via 411Mania). “I would think he’s not selling that hard for [a wrestling gimmick], no, I don’t see it.”
As for Hogan, he said he was clean-shaven for a few “budget” movies like Assault on Devil’s Island, but he didn’t exactly open up about the reason for the storyline move. However, he did tell Chris Van Vliet that he thinks that moment was probably the last time he had actually ever been fully clean-shaven.
During a 2012 interview, Hogan told TMZ he planned to shave his mustache again for new movie roles, but that ultimately never came to pass.
Hulk Hogan died in July 2025 at age 71. The investigation into his death came to a conclusion in June 2025, with his death being ruled a natural cause.
