There’s an update on Eric Young’s expected role in WWE following his exit from TNA.
TNA Wrestling announced yesterday that they have come to terms with the release of former two-time World Champion Eric Young. Later, Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported that it was Young who requested his release from the promotion and revealed that the door is open for him to return to WWE.
Sapp also noted that Young had always maintained a good relationship with Triple H, and WWE sources expect him to go back to the promotion, though they were unclear about his specific role.
Now, F4WOnline‘s Bryan Alvarez has provided an update on Young’s expected role in WWE, saying, “Eric Young expected to be a ‘player/coach’ in NXT.”
Dave Meltzer expanded on the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio, saying the player/coach role Eric Young is expected to take in NXT is similar to the role Shawn Spears plays. He also said WWE sources mentioned September as a tentative return month, though he was not 100% sure.
Shawn Spears, who previously wrestled in WWE as Tye Dillinger, returned to the promotion in 2024 after a run in AEW. He’s currently the leader of The Culling faction in NXT. According to the report, Eric Young could play a similar role in NXT, both as an in-ring performer and as a talent coach.
